meet: nancy mungcal of pretty little thieves
i stumbled across nancy mungcal's compelling work and haven't been able to take my eyes off of it sense. nancy mungcal is an amazing artist living in southern california. her pieces are mostly of girls who remind me of myself that are living in a world full of heartbreak (basically me, kinda). nancy was so sweet to talk to us and share with us. check out her answers and work below, her art is powerful and speaks for itself.
what is your background?
i am self-taught. i grew up always drawing, painting and making things. i have never really stopped. i was in a creative field before i pursued art. without any real planning, i took a giant leap and left my career and began to pursue art. before that decision, only my family and a few friends ever saw any of my work.
i believe everyone has their own path and talents. i think you have an inherent style that further develops from your commitment to doing work. i don't think my style would have developed as well without the leap of faith as well as faith in the work.
how did you get started start with your etsy?
i joined etsy in 2008 and didn't start selling until the next year. etsy was much smaller then. i started with small paintings and screen prints.
tell us about how you developed your style and what inspires you.
i try to constantly make new work and to stay open to the possibilities of where my work can take me. it's a process of learning to let go and also digging deep within. there's plenty of experimenting, making messes, learning and moving forward.
my inspirations tend to be emotional conflicts, heartache, sadness, connections and disconnections.
what is your favorite medium to work in?
gouache, watercolor, ink on paper.
what are you most looking forward to this year?
my work has been included in group shows so that's been great this year. i have a few more coming up so i'm looking forward to those as well as making new work and different projects. the holidays are also coming up so it'll be nice to spend time with family and friends.
what advice would you give to makers who are just getting started?
be proud of yourself, things take time, patience helps, keep making, moving forward and putting your work out there.
